The Finnish Lighthouse Society aims at making the situation of threatened lighthouses known in public and to secure their future. Also, the valuable stone marks and other smaller lights of archipelago and lakes, need preserving. Through its connections, the Finnish Lighthouse Society can arrange trips to lighthouses and lighthouse islands behind difficult seaways both in Finland and abroad. In the late autumn 2006 we grew our efforts to save the beautiful and unique
Märket lighthouse that stands on a small cliff that is devided between Finland and Sweden. The lighthouse was accidentally built by Russian Empire to the Swedish side of the cliff in 1885 and only in 1981 the border was corrected with a very strange - and unique - Z curve.
These days we're "celebrating" the 30 th anniversary of the automatisation of Märket which meant that the lighthouse building was left cold and alone in the middle of the sea.
The Märket lighthouse has survived for 121 years, and we in the Finnish Lighthouse Society will defend Märket as long as it is needed.
