WEEK 20: Anu, Jorma, Liisa and Pasi

Approaching Märket reef.
Previous group leaving the island.
New group taking the tour around the island.

The weather was on our side as we travelled to Märket. During the boat ride we saw some seals and arctic terns. Spring has arrived to archipelago! Lighthouse kitchen was well equipped and preparing rice and indian sauce was easy. We thank the last week’s group and wish them a safe trip home.

Among the common tasks on lighthouse island Jorma and Pasi tore down the tile stove.
Work started from the top and proceeded towards the fire place.
Working goes smoothly when you do it in good company!
Before starting the tile stove-project the surroundings were protected thoroughly.
Lighthouse bathing in the midday fog.

In the most sheltered parts of the island one can find bright yellow lichen. We wonder what species is it. Contrast between the grey rocks and yellow colour is very beautiful.

Despite the grey weather the atmosphere is cozy and while taking a break on the work one can make observations about the nature. From the shore you can, with a bit of luck, see the head of a seal looking at the lighthouse island. The nature is also making observations on us.

Vacuum-cleaning the room after removal of the tile stove.
Lilla Märket. This is were we bath.
Winch is also handy in lifting the dishes.

Washing the sauna water tank
Jorma and Pasi enjoying the view.
Picture taken through telescope.
Mirage! What a sight!
The flying dutchman? Nooo…a cargo ship heading south.
Liisa taking care of the business. Ah, all the cards we sold!

We noticed something weird nearby horizon well before the midday. As the day went on this strange detail on landscape came more vivid. Suddenly all the boats, islands and beacons were closer. Even things behind the horizon line came visible. A science magazine article told us that when the layer right above the sea is much cooler than upper part of oxygene layer, together they make a lens, in a way. This lens makes the beams of light bend away from surface of the water.

Understanding the fysiology of this performance did not make it less startling for us. Distant islands appeared well on sight, reminded of mesas, anvils and ghost ships.

The pancake recipe I wrote about yesterday turned out to be tasty. Teaspoon of cardamom makes all the difference! We recommend trying this at home.
