Saturday 15.6. – Saturday 22.6.2013

Saturday 15.6.2013 Nice start for the week

Ladies from the previous crew were not so happy to leave the Märket, but in this photo they look gorgeous.
It was a very fine travelling day for both groups.
The ligthouse rested under the cloudless sky waiting for three members of the new crew.
The work started with putting various building materials to dry on the sunny rocks.

After an easy start, some materials were lifted and stored upstairs. This task demanded a bit of brainwork, planning, using safety equipments and hard work.

Just after work we got sudden guests from the swedish coastguard with red waterjet. They were measuring border points on islets in all swedish sea areas. It was a short visit with coffee, cakes and discussions of special boderlines on Märket.

And then everything calmed down, we went to sleep.

Sunday 16.6.2013

The Sun is hidden and the birds were hidden in scenery so well, that finally only one catshed in photo

There were rain and wind wishing us wellcome to a new day. Altought the islet was beautiful in various colors.

We stayed mostly inside doing household works and organising places.
Waiting for the next shower of rain; one of our very necessary rainwater tank needed cleaning of algae. Only problem was to find a suitable tool and it was solbed by remodellation of brush.
Delicious lunch, rich with taste of vegetables, was enjoyed in bright sunshine. One visitor came to take part in lunch with us.

Afterwards we did some findings in parcel that was related with our next days task.

One little rain in the afternoon, it stopped as soon as it started.

Monday 17.06.2013 Shop fixing and dirty works

The lighthouse society have a little shop on Märket lighthouse. Outi, the responsible person of the shop here, has been organising and fixing things, that society offers to sale for all visitors here. On Märket we have unique T-shirts, calendars, postcards, books and special Märket- postmarks and envelopes. Also all instructions are now updated. These are needed for guiding all volunteers during the season.

We want and try to save all those wonderful memories of previous periods at the lighthouse. These objects are worth seeing, so they are installed in our shop. One of the rooms is a museum.

We had to do some tasks with different garbages. It included emtying biotoilets etc.

On Märket you might find yourself doing something, you didn´t know you are able to.

Tuesday 18.6.2013           Rainy day, inside working

Unfortunately we have had problems with connections, it is wery common on this remote islet.

Thunderstorm is rising, we were busy to protect the cements.

The renovation tasks has been started today. Heli was scratshing old paint carefully.
Outi prepaired the covering plates of rebuilted owen for painting.

Marja-Leena was hardly broken with diary of two days and did nothing else.

Luckily working with old windows was going like a dance

Wednesday 19.6.2013 Old things are worth preserving

All we, volunteers on Märket, are doing different renovation works to save the building and its athmosphire. Otherwise time and hard conditions here would slowly destroy this old lighthouse.

All our tasks are planned and guided carefully and leaded by dedicated professionals. Every step is also documented. A week after another a small group of us are here to take the renovation works further.

We feel it is important work to do, and we are proud of it.

Here we reuse all old materials in next working phase. Today we have handled used, old wooden floor boards. These were very heavy to move.
Also the shorter ones will be useful.
The boards were washed on two rounds. First round we made with large amount of water and brushing. After that, more brushing, using soap of linseed oil and rinsing again. In the beginning they were very dirty, at the end they loog quite different.
In some building works at Märket also new materials are used, so we have them in storage.
In the kitchen is a gas owen, Heli cleaned it thoroughly.
Also other works are still going on.

20.6 Thursday, The warm water is coming from south

This morning weather is rather windy, but the wind has changed warmer. Yesterday evening wind felt quite chilly, so we made fire in owen to warm up our cozy restingroom. With rolling waves the seawater is warming up, too. It’s raining slightly outside.

During last night one little seal has taken place on nearest cliff behind the lighthouse. From the window in kitchen we can see the waves sweeping over it. Also many new kinds of birds stay around the islet today. We are not able to identify them.

The rebuilted owen in big sleepingroom is now painted. It looks very fine.
For lunch we had danish sandviches, delicious ones.
In the evening sun is looking inside trough the same kitchen window. The light makes incredible figures and colous at painted wall and pans. And a pie, made of fresh rhubarb, waits for tasting.

After sunset we can see the moon near the lantern as we did last night. Next weekend is going to be full moon, rare one, because it is then very near the earth. We wish to see it.

Friday 21.6.2013, Midsummer Eve: A Ghost and guests

At sunny morning, after an early breakfast at terrace, we started to celebrate midsummer eve in a traditonal Finnish way. That means working. On Märket we celebrate the summertime and these circumstances every day, that’s why special midsummer seremonies feel unnessessary.

For a rescue need, the life-belt was hanged up near to our boat. Other one is placed on the yard.
Also the cleaned roof boards were protected against rain.

After scratshing the wall of upper floor stairs, Heli took away the loosen pieces. There is suitable work for a patient person to continue this task. Here it will be also saved, as a model chart, where all the various painting layers of past years can be seen.

At noon a hideous fog game from north with a cold, misty wind. This miserable ghost wrapped our island so fast, that we could only be marvelling it. We lost sight of Lilla Märket, a little building on yard, the distance being about 10 meters. To see nothing is very exiting experience.

A sailing boat was on the way to Märket, but disappeared later in fog. It passed our island.

But we got guests. A group of four persons came paddling via Understen, the lightouse on Swedish side, from Denmark. Further their route leads around Åland and the Finnish archipelago to Åbo. On the way jome they will take some cruiser. They had read about Märket on some blogdiscussion in internet. On their foggy route here they had a hope to meet some life on islet. -We three girls were on waterline to meet them.

Guests were very intrested about the Finnish Lightouse Society and its recent activity at Märket. They took a little rest with coffee, and were served with sandwiches and some sweet pieces. Of course, a tour in lighthouse, was done. Postcards with Märkets own stamps are now on they way to Denmark.

The quests thougth that Märket is very intresting and exiting place to visit and they were grateful of hospitality they met here. All best wishes to theiy tour!

This Photo is taken in stairs, where the walls are in original condition.

In our guestroom on second floor the wallpapers needs to be renovated. In picture you can see that it is not so easy work to do. We have started with it today.

Saturday 22.6.2013 Midsummer Day

Brisk start with cleaning and furnishing all rooms inside the lighthouse. Cobwebs were hanging everywhere.

Now they are tidy and ready for visitors, and the next group of volunteers. It is so hard wind today, that it is not likely more guests to come. Because of misty wind, we warmed up some of the owens.

Before noon we finished our tasks and took all our handled tools to they places.

Again we had a delicious dinner. Our cook, Heli has made during whole week so tasty and variable servings, that we all are in very fine fit.

At afternoon the terns presented us an exiting incident. One of those had managed to catsh a fish into its mouth. The others would have liked to take a little bit of fish too, so they had a longlasting fight in the air.

Rest of the day we were vandering around this quite little, cozy lighthouse, already a bit missing it, because we are leaving tomorrow.

In the evening we enjoyed our life at lighthouses temporary sauna.

With kinds regards

Outi-Sofia, Heli, Marja-leena
