Saturday 7.5.2016

Today started with a lot of cleaning and washing dishes in a warm sunny morning. Due to Mats´s timetable, the change of the crew wasn`t until in the afternoon.

Pasi had some time to teach Anne and Tipe how to end knots properly.

Pasi also decorated our living room, now we have a photograph and a calender on the wall.

Together with Mats arrived 3 lovely ladies from Åland. They were eager to hear about the island and take photos. They also found a geo catch hidden in… We won´t tell you!

We were sad to leave Anne, Kaija and Tipe with Mats. We wish them all a safe journey back home and we will see them soon, hopefully! Pasi and Emilia are staying another week with Juha, our newest crew member this time.

Juha was put in action immediately with the dishes. Juha luckily seemed to enjoy the task!

Pasi was wise enough to bring his spyglass and we have all been enjoying it a lot.

Sunday 8.5.2016

Once again we have had a beautiful and sunny day here in Märket! It seems as if the sky has been clear blue for a week now.

It has been a pleasure to wash dishes in a spot like this and with a great sea view.

The seals have been very curious and brave with us lately. This one was napping at the eastern side of the cliffs.

Pasi and Jussi cleaned up the storage room. They removed old timber and lifted up the red boat from the way. The magasin looks so tidy and empty now!

We have been watching the frogs mating in the pond. ”Sex in Märket”, Pasi said.

Sauna night for the crew. Emilia was crazy enough to go swimming. We are all amazed how great experience the sauna is every time in Märket

Monday 9.5.2016

Still one more sunny day, almost no wind. Not only we ”lighthouse workers” enjoyed the sunny day.

Pasi and Emilia doing an inventory of fire-extinguishers. Safety first.

Spring has already come to Märket.

Even in a sunny day it´s important to clean kitchen. Emilia has wiped shelves and planned new tableclothes.

Collecting rainwater is important in a distant island. Pasi is installing three barrels together for collecting more water.

Recycling waste is part of our work. Jussi making waste smaller for transport to continent.

After day´s working we went for roundtrip to see seals enjoying sunny evening.

Tuesday 10.5.2016

Hello from Märket! Once again, sunshine!

Pasi and Juha spent their morning removing rocks from the old harbour and making more space for our rubber boat. The task was difficult without a pair of rubber boots, but the strong men managed to get rid of some big rocks.

The men also did some inventory in the upper magasin. They counted all the electrical working tools and it seems that we have a few in Märket!

 

We had some surprise visitors from Geta. Two friendly sailors were guided around the island and offered some coffee.

Pasi took a shot of a majestic white-tailed eagle aka Haliaeetus albicilla. In the evening strong winds from North started blowing. Dark clouds also came to the horizont.

Wednesday 11.5.2016

The strong winds from North that we had last night were almost gone this morning. Also the seals were gone as we saw no seals in Märket today.

Pasi started his tasks early as always. Taking care of working equipment makes everything easier. Here Pasi is grinding the axe. We are so lucky to have this skillful man in the crew!

Good order is half of the work. Pasi and Juha created a new place for the working tools.

Pasi also fixed the screw vise that had always been broken. Now it is good as new!

What comes tomorrow who knows?

Thursday 12.5.2016

The night was calm and quiet and Emilia decided to sleep on the rocks of Märket. It was comfortable and warm, she said. And she will do it again!

The men continued cleaning up the old harbour from big rocks. They managed to lift some big rocks and move them away. The sea level was really low and all the big rocks were visible in the old harbour area.

Emilia enjoyed the sun by cleaning up the kitchen ware outside the lighthouse.

Pasi and Juha fixed the water pipe that runs water to sauna. It no longer pumps air as it did before, since Pasi removed the transparent part of the pipe.

As the afternoon went by, strong winds started blowing from the south. Emilia baked some pulla for men after hard work´s day.

Friday 13.5.2016

Last day of our crew in Märket, we hope. We have prepared for leaving all the day, cleaning, packing etc. But the waves seem to get higher and winds stronger. Let’s see!

Juha is packing iron scrap for recycling in the mainland.

Emilia is hanging the carpets on the handrailings in order to clean them. Floors were washed with Euca that Kaija kindly left us and it now smells lovely inside the lighthouse.

The toilet is being cleaned up, too..

The wooden gratings on the floor is washed properly. Spottless lighthouse! And old wisdom proved today to be true: it seems to be impossible to light fire in the ovens, when the wind blows from North East. Only the smoke comes in (we tested).
