Finally! It’s time for a week in Märket. It’s exciting and new experience to work in a small, isolated and ascetic but so beautiful island between Finland and Sweden. We are looking for peace and silence as well as opportunity to do something useful by our own hands.

We got a great weather for changing! Five new crew members, five tourists and Buster was packed to Sefyr in Käringsund in Saturday morning. It meant we had 9 Märket newbies in a boat.

Ahoy, something striped in horizon…
The first tourist guidance of the week.
Last week crew wasn’t as eager to go back as it looks in this pic…

There is lots of new to see and learn for first-timers! “Any questions?” No, but I bet they will follow later… Tour and safety walk was interesting and very important.

Pera told us about the buildings.
Did you know Inari is located in the most Western point of Finland?
Even the seal came to welcome us!

First day is for new friends, settle up and some small tasks. And for great food, of course.

Sunday 29.6.2014

Sunday was a day for dirty jobs as well as clean tasks. Rainy weather kept us mostly indoors. Inari painted shop windows while Jari and Pera made a place for emergency exit instructions. Then Minna and Pera made some room for new organic waste. Meanwhile some magic happened in kitchen and bedrooms by Outi and Helena – spider-webs are gone. Jari and Pera gave a finishing touch for sauna and Minna studied some rope works (results will be introduced later this week).

Lilla Märket in rain.
Inari paints shop windows.
Emergency instructions need to be found easily.
Recycling is fun!
Looks worse than smells.
Magic happens in a smoke screen…
Jari is doing precise job with sauna stairs…
… and Black Guillemot wonders what happens in their upstairs.

Monday 30.6.2014

Foggy and misty weather caused unreal feeling. Like the islet was floating alone in the universe… We even had to check the compass directions.

Yes, north is still in north.
Art installation of the day: Misty ladders.

But no worries, we had work to do. Repairing of the wall continued.

Tools for today.
Hammer and chisel.
Drill and spray.
Concrete press and hand.

Water was quite calm, so we had to made waves by ourselves.

Royal waves from the lighthouse tower.
A seal also came to wave for us behind the magazine building.

Tuesday 1.7.2014

This was the most beautiful day of the week so far. It also meant that we had lots of visitors at islet. We started preparations right after breakfast.

Inari googled some geological information about Märket.
Jari and Pera returned shop windows.

First visitor was Meritaito work boat – they brought us some equipment, serviced a lantern and took away a waste oil barrel. Then came Mats and Sefyr with 9 guests. They had barely left when s/y Mihanna arrived with 3 sailors. M/s Tavi was already waiting with 16 divers.

Meritaito grew loading a barrel.
Pera tells safety instructions for the first visitor group.
Happy sailors and a guide on the rocks.
It’s always nice to guide an enthusiastic group of divers.
Some of us has also time to make kitchen equipment.
After a hard day sauna is more than welcome.

Wednesday 2.7.2014

Messages from the mainland told about rainy weather, but we had a beautiful sunshine with some wind. Working with the wall continued as well as window project.

Well planned is half done
Ready, steady, go!
A red spot
Men at work
A happy window cleaner

Great weather forced us to relax, too.

A dummy worker?
A well deserved break from kitchen

Minna’s rope project:

Now it’s easy to see if the toilet is free or occupied.

Thursday 3.7.2014

Today weather changed from sun to rain while wind blows around 10 m/s from south west. Teddies and Tolvanas are also interested in about forecasts.

Weather forecast for shipping
Sunshine disturbs working

Sailboat passed us in a nice tail wind, but only a bit later a motor boat drove to our harbor.

Felicia brought us a happy group of visitors
T-shirts and post cards were popular today

In the afternoon we finally hit to the magazine.

Lots of important stuff

When days are full of work, kitchen plays an important role!

Friday 4.7.2014

The last whole day of our week was full of sunshine! Some last tasks and few visitors helped us to keep our feet on the ground.

Amazing women by the sea
The upstairs of magazine is now in order
Mia and Staffan visited us on their way from Sweden to Åland
