LAUANTAI 22.7. / SATURDAY 22nd July
Viikon 30 talkooporukka on nyt kasassa ja paikan päällä ollaan.
Märket voluntary crew of week 30 is together and on location.

Märket otti meidät vastaan aurinkoisena ja hyväntuulisena, ja niin muuten myös edellinen talkooväki.
(Alakuvassa ne onkin jo lähdössä).
Märket received us sunny and in good humour, as well as did the previous crew.
(Oh, and in the picture below they are actually leaving.)

Illallisen jälkeen kuljimme ympäri saarta kamerat edellä, kuvissa majakkaa sieltä ja täältä.
After dinner we roamed around the island with our cameras, taking fotos of the lighthouse here and there.

Illemmalla myös rajavartiosto poikkesi käynnillä. Mitään epäilyttävää ei meidän vahtivuoron aikana löytynyt. Osa talkooporukasta ei meinannut pysyä nahoissaan kun vihdoin saatiin vieraita… jotka ostivat sitten tiensä ulos parilla postikortilla ja T-paidalla, niin pääsivät lähtemään innokkaiden talkoolaisten keskeltä eteenpäin. Olimme siis koko päivän odottaneet vieraita.
In the evening we also had a visit from the Finnish coast guard. They didn’t find anything suspicious on our watch. Part of our voluntary crew were a bit overly excited about finally getting visitors… who then bought their way out through the eager crew – price was cheap, only a couple of postcards and T-shirts. I mean, we had waited for guests all day.

Kalliota, merta ja auringon kimallusta aalloilla. Ensimmäinen yö Märketillä lähestyy. Ulkona tiirat, aaltojen kohina. Bedrock, the sea and sparkles on the waves. First night on Märket awaits. Outside the terns, whispers of the waves.

 

SUNNUNTAI 23.7 / SUNDAY 23rd July

Yö oli rauhallinen.

Aamupalan jälkeen osa porukasta intoutui harjoittelemaan veneenkäsittelytaitoja. Sääkin kun oli suotuisa.
Hyvin näytti sujuvan ja kaikki pääsi ruoriin.
 

Tänään ei vierailijoita meillä käynyt ja saimme huilata eilisen rajavartioiden rynnäkön jälkeen. Mutta huomenna ovat vieraat erittäin tervetulleita. Täällä on jo valmiiksi leivottu ja testattu mantelikuorrutettu kakku ja sitä todellakin uskaltaa tarjota myös nälkäisille matkalaisille.

Maanantai 24.7. / Monday 24th July
Märketin flamingot / Märket flamingos

Tänään oli sääennustusten mukaan meidän talkoovuoromme aurinkoisin ja lämpimin päivä. 20 astetta ja aurinkoista, Tuuli 3-5 m/s (puuskat 7-9 m/s). Ennusteissa oli pelkkää aurinkoa, kumpupilviä kuitenkin nousi erityisesti idästä, ja etelästä, ja myös muista suunnista.

According to the weather forecast, today was the sunniest and warmest day of our shift. 20 degrees and sunny, Wind 3-5 m/s (gusts 7-9 m/s). There was only sun in the forecast, however cumulus clouds rose especially from the east and south, and also from other directions.

Pohdimme Märketin lintulajeja. Selasimme nettiä ja lintukirjoja, otimme valokuvia linnuista ja zoomailimme kameroilla, kiikaroimme. Yksi liittyi 100 lintulajia haasteeseen. Tiiroja on, mutta millaisia tiiroja: miten erottaa ovatko ne kala- vai lapintiiroja? Tylli, isokoskelo, naarashaahka, merimetso, meriharakka, haarapääsky – tunnistettu. Ja täällä on ihan tosi paljon pieniä lintuja, jotka kipittelevät kallioilla ja rantavesissä: onko tuo suosirri? Ja vielä on lintu kuin punajalkaviklo, mutta ilman punaisia jalkoja: nuori mustaviklo? Voisimme nimetä sen myös uutena lajina: Märketin flamingo. Tunnistatko nämä tyypit?

We were pondering about Märket’s bird species. We browsed the internet and bird books, took photos of birds and zoomed with cameras and binoculars. One of us joined the 100 bird species challenge. There are terns, but what kind of terns: how do you tell if they are Common Terns or Arctic Terns? Ringed Plover, Goose Ander, female Common Eider, Cormorant, Oystercatcher, (Barn) Swallow – identified. And there are quite a lot of small birds here that peck on the rocks and the coastal waters eating something: is that a Dunlin? And there is still a bird that reminds us of the red-legged (Common) Redshank, but without the red legs: is that a young Spotted Redshank? We could also name it as a new species: Märket’s flamingo. Do you recognize these guys?

We also had sauna and the jacuzzis in the program.

We also observed the Baltic Seals.

Saunan- ja grillinjälkeinen ilta eteni vielä hetken seesteiseissä merkeissä.
After the barbeque and the sauna, the evening continued serenely for a little while.

Tiistai 25.7. / Tuesday 25th July

Aamulla herätessä kohtasimme harmaan saderintaman. Pysyimme sisällä, useimmat koko päivän. Jotkut kokosivat palapeliä, pari leipoi, muut söivät. Lopuksi jotkut uivat. Sitten söimme iltapalaa. Höyhensaaret odottavat tänään jo aikaisemmin.

We woke up to a grey rainfront in the morning. We pretty much stayed inside: Some did a jigsawpuzzle, couple baked stuff, the rest of us just ate. Few of us went for a swim. Then we had an evening snack. Sandman awaits us on Höyhensaaret, soon.

 

 

 

 

Keskiviikko 26.7 / Wednesday 26th July

Uusi päivä, uudet kujeet – aamu valkeni aurinkoisissa merkeissä yön hyljehavainnon jälkeen ja heti aamiaisen jälkeen alettiin leivontahommiin vieraiden toivossa. Lupaavan ennusmerkin vieraiden saapumisesta antoi luodon yllä pörrännyt helikopteri, mutta ilo osoittautui ennenaikaiseksi, koska kopteri käänsi kurssinsa ja suuntasi lopulta pois laskeutumatta luodolle. Majakassa tehtiin myös kuumottavia havaintoja jättihämähäkeistä! Lopuksi istuttiin porukalla iltaa majakan katveessa erinäisten virkistävien virvokkeiden kanssa.

New day, new tricks – the morning started with the sunshine after the sighting of the seal last night, and right after the breakfast the baking commenced. The helicopter come buzzing over the skerry which gave us hope of forthcoming visitors but this turned out to be false hope as the copter did a 180 and headed away. There were also sightings of the giant spiders at the lighthouse! Finally we spent the evening with our crew by the lighthouse with some nice refreshments.

 

 

Torstai 27.7. / Thursday 27th July

Aamu alkoi naapuriluodon tarkkailulla, jolla hengaili tänään yhtäaikaisesti ainakin 6 hyljettä (emme ole ihan varmoja kuinka monta, sillä keskellä luotoa oli niin tiivis hyljekasa, ettei täyttä varmuutta saatu.) Heidän kiitoratansa sijaitsi toisella puolella luotoa.
 

Saimme tänään myös ihmisvieraita. Eikä kerran, vaan peräti kahdesti! Haimme heitä poijulta kumiveneellä.

Aurinkoinen, mutta tuulinen päivä luodolla tarjosi meille taas hieman erilaisen kokemuksen saaristolaiselämästä. Enää rakeet ja jäämyrsky, niin on miltei koko sääpaletti kasassa.

Juuri ennen tuulen yltymistä lähtivät ensimmäiset vieraamme jatkamaan matkaansa. Tuuli yltyi iltaa kohti yhteentoista metriin sekuntiin, seuraava erä matkailijoita kohtasi jo 9 m/s vastatuulen. Illalla tuulilukemat näyttivät pitkään yli 11 m/s tuulen nopeutta. Edelleen mittari näyttää 10 m/s.

And now in english, as promised above.
Several grey seals visited neighbouring islet to sunbathe on the shore. The day was sunny, but windy. Didn´t seem to bother those seals though.
Also, two separate groups of human visitors enjoyed their stay at the island for a while. We gave them a tour and some tea/coffee with cinnamon rolls.

Perjantai 28.7. / Friday 28th July

Päivä toi tullessaan säävaihteluita: tuulta ja sadetta, tyyntä ja paistetta. Tarkkailimme lähiluodon hylkeitä heti aamusta alkaen. Vieraita kävi viisi ihmistä ja yksi koira. Lemmikki valloitti osan meistä sydämiä sillä välin kun hänen laumaansa kuljetettiin majakkakierroksella. Söimme talkooviikon jämäherkkuja, puunasimme ja putsailimme majakkaa seuraavia talkoolaisia varten. Tyynellä säällä yksi talkoolainen innostui uimaan Märketin ympäri. Lähiluodon hylkeet väistivät uimaria varmuuden vuoksi kauemmaksi, kunnes hän oli kadonnut näköpiiristä. Illalla tuuli alkoi hiljalleen nousta uudelleen. Saimme vielä pari myöhäistä vierasta, jotka pysähtyivät saarelle valokuvaamaan.

The day brought us+ a variety of weather: wind and rain, calm and sunny. We observed seals on the nearby islet from the beginning of the morning. We had guests: five people and one dog. The pet captured some of our hearts while his pod was taking a tour of the lighthouse. We ate the week’s left over treats, cleaned the lighthouse for the next volunteers. The calm weather inspired one volunteer was to swim around the Märket island. To be on the safe side, the seals on the nearby shoal evaded the swimmer until she had disappeared from sight. In the later evening, the wind slowly started to pick up again. We still had a couple of late guests who stopped by the island to take photos.
