Week 36: Jori, Jussi, Mikko-Oskari ja Riikka

Saturday 30.8.2014

Saturday morning was sunny and bright, so it was nice to start our trip. Sephyr took three guests and two volunteers to Märket. Jussi and Jori started their second week at Märket, Mikko-Oskari and Riikka are new ones; Riikka is only first-timer.

Visitors from Finland and United Kingdom

After our guest left, Jussi and Jori started to work on the roof. They were meant to fix it last week, but weather was too windy. Today weather was it´s finest and guys made lots of progress with new roof.

Jussi planning what to do next at the roof

We had also a lunch visitor; a hawk brought food with him and was going to eat his catch at sauna. Jori interrupted lunch and hawk flew away with empty stomach.

Sunday 31.8.2014

Sunday started sunny, but then came clouds. Fortunately it didn´t rain, so we were able to keep on working at the roof.

Mikko-Oskari prepared tasty Sunday dinner for us, he also baked delicious apple pie.

Yesterday a hawk visited us, today we had much smaller flying visitor. It must have been tired, because Riikka found it from her bed. Even though we all appreciate visitors, we gently directed this little visitor outside. Let´s see what kind of visitors we have tomorrow.

Monday 1.9.2014

Early Monday morning we noticed that a sailing boat had attached to Märkets buoy. Few hours later Ville and Jarno from Rauma came on shore to meet us and naturally they were interested in Märket itself.

Visitors from Rauma came at 5 am.

We had also two other visitors as well, even thoug Mats and David were not tourists; they came to install new hand rails outside. Mats brought also us some wood so we can chop firewood.

Weather was sunny and warm, so we decided to grill us some lunch. Our grill didn´t work properly, so Jussi and Jori moved all the stones from the grill. That didn´t help, but fortunately they did find out what the problem was and managed to fixed it -now the grill works as well as a new one.

Jussi and Jori served ”meat balls” made of grill stones

Mats and David did work hard with the hand rails. New red rails fit very well to Märkets image, but this colour might be temporary.

Today we didn´t have any flying visitors inside, but during the day we admired three hawks flying around the isle.

Tuesday 2.9.2014

Here at Märket many things rely on weather. We can never be sure in the morning are we able to do all the tasks we have planned. In the morning it can be sunny, but in a blink everything can change. We have had lots of sun this week, but wind has played few tricks on us.

Wind was also a little bit heavy today, so we couldn´t continue putting bitumen on the roof, but Jori and Jussi installed some eaves to finished parts of the roof instead. Bit by bit roof is getting done, we still have few working days left this week, we are hoping calm days.

Mats and David came today to continue hand rail job which they started on Monday. They got contract almost done, few minor adjustements were left to be done later this fall. No we have safe and sturdy rails.

We got nine visitors today; they were guys from The Finnish Border Guard. Their vessel Uisko was in nearby so they came to say hello to us. Mikko-Oskari took border guards on tour around Märket -naturally we offered them also a cup of coffee.

We did also have new flying visitor: a bean goose landed here. It didn´t mind us even though there were several papparazzi´s filming him at the same time. Let´s see how long goose stays here and are we going to have some new birds here tomorrow.

Wednesday 3.9.2014

It feels like time has stopped. We don´t need clocks, time is not important to us (only our stomachs tell when it is time to eat). We live in moments, little and big ones.

Thursday 4.9.2014

Wind rose last nigt and whole Thursday has been quite windy. At morning we noticed that wind had brought us new decoration -there was a fisherman´s buoy floating at waterfront.

Riikka learned a new skill today; she used a chainsaw first time ever. As a scout she is used to handle saw only manually. Scout knowledge was still useful; she had to chop wood also with an axe in order to get it small enough to be used in sauna.

Good news from the roof: all bitumen is finally done! There are still few eaves waiting to be install, but finish line is near. Due to a strong wind eaves have to wait to an other day. We moved all construction materials off the roof already, let´s hope that tomorrow this project is done.

During the day we got to admire four hawks and four eagles that were flying above us. Hawks flew quite near us, but eagles kept safety distance. Unfortunately we didn´t get any pictures of those gorgeous birds.

Friday 5.9.2014

We started Friday with little ”fishing”; Jussi and Jori decided to catch the buoy which appeared here yesterday. Buoy didn´t surrender easily, but our fisherman were stubborn and they catched the wanderer eventually.

Calm morning turned into a busy one after Sephyr brought us load of visitors. There were few next weeks volunteers but also members of media.

Jussi and Marcus started an old diesel engine (Wickström DD4K, 27 HW) first time in public in few dacades. They had repaired the engine earlier this summer and today they started it in front of enthusiastic audience. It take few attemps before engine started to work properly. There was a little bit fumes and a lots of noise but first and foremost lots of admiration towards both repair men and the machine itself.

Last eaves to the new roof were ment to be installed today, but the wind was far too heavy so those last bits were left to next weeks workers. Jussi managed to install one eaves with help of Jori but then they had to give up.
