Week 37: Johanna, Hilkka, Pekka, Taru

Saturday 6.9.2014

Saturday morning was misty in Eckerö, but Safyr and Mats managed to drive us (Hilkka and Taru) safely to Märket through the mist.  Half of  this week`s crew,  Johanna and Pekka, were already on the island.

Because it was Saturday, we didn`t do much of work. Only Pekka did some finishing work on the roof.

The mist took maybe the main role today. It stayed with us until evening.

Sunday 7.9.2014

Sunday morning was calm and at the afternoon came the sun and summer to the island.

Hilkka won the morning lottery to become master chef for sunday. We enjoyded a delicious Indian-style lunch. The rest of us continued saturdays tasks, chopping firewood, installing last missing parts on the rooftop and making to-do-lists for coming days.

Although it was calm, super sunny and warm, almost like in July, and we were prepared for a rush of visitors, we did not have any, unfortunately.

But luckily we had one seal on the cliffs…. equipped with rubberboots, book and a blanket.

Warm enough to eat perfect lighthouse food, banana pancakes, outside.

In the evening we had our first sauna of the week.

Monday 8.9.2014

Also today we got the opportunity to begin day`s work in the charming weather. Hilkka worked with her Märket book translation project while we others made and transported firewoods.

At the afternoon was a good time to start painting the rail.

In the evening the weather began to change, wind became harder and clouds emerged on the sky. Luckily were we inside, close to heated stoves where Hilkka told us exciting stories from the forthcoming Märket book.

9.9.2014 Tuesday

People are clearly getting used to Märket timetable, because many of us were up very early today. Other early birds were sparrowhawk and white-tailed eagle, which was seen catching a fish on the cliffs.

One today´s dilemma was  which colour do we use to paint the rails. Would it be nice if they all are white, red, red & white striped, or something totally different?

Although it was grey today, the air felt very soft and warm. To get more refreshment we decided to go rowing around the island. It was suprisingly warm there also.

We continued this week`s  tasks like painting, translating and Johanna and Pekka began to work with chimney pipe.

Recently Märket has been in differenet media (Turun Sanomat, Ålands radio, Huvudtadsbladet) and we have tried to read and listen what journalists have said about the lighthouse. http://www.ts.fi/uutiset/kotimaa/673675/Marketin+majakan+remontti+urakoitiin+valmiiksi

10.9.2014 Wednesday

Tomorrow morning there were more bird singing than earlier. Goldcrests seemed to gather around the terrace and since then they have companied us the whole day. We were wondering how did they come here, because goldcrests are normally forest trees.

Hilkka continued to make delicious lighthouse food, this time tunasteaks. For a coffee break we found a warm and windless spot in this most windy place in Finland.

Johanna, Pekka and one of the goldcrests spent the afternoon working in the attic. They fixed the last parts of chimney.

From attic comes also today`s puzzle:

What is machine used for?

What is this machine?

11.9.2014 Thursday

Thursday has been full of joy and sunshine. Today we got also our first visitors, a guy from Vaasa and a little group from Sweden. Our visitor from Vaasa helped us in solving yesterday´s puzzle about the strange machine. He found a patent number in it. The mysterious machine turned out to be a cigarette filling machine invented by Andstem & Hagelberg in year 1898.

We started to scratch and paint the lighthouse.

In the afternoon the weather was so calm that we were able to take a joyride with the motorboat to watch seals and sceneries. Speed of wind was about zero during our trip.
