120909 New Crew
Today Märket got a new fresh and eager watch, two gentleman Timo and Teemu, one fine lady Outi. Kalle from the old watch is still on duty. Saara travelled home. The weather is too nice for the novices beacouse this is obviosly the stormiest place in Finland. The schedule of crew change worked perfectly on time. The whole team fixed up prfectly together withoutany troubles. Chief cook fixed traditional lighthouse lunch / dinner ; Pasta a la Tonno. The darkness is kissing us but Märket lightsignal is still awake.
130909 The Slaves of Märket
Last night it was a heavy rain witch drummed the roof of Outis princess cabin on the top of the lighthouse. Because the slaves of Märket must work everyday we decided to celebrate this very Sunday doing cleaning and welfare works.
During sunny afternoon we noticed beautiful rainbow on the northen sky. It was very near but we couldn´t find the huge pot full of gold.
The light of Märket to be continued…
140909 The Spirit of Märket
To day the male watch unload the ballast water from the daycruiser/rescueboat. Chiefengineer/Chiefcook tested the mainengine of the cruiser.
Female watch was fishing salmon and sharks but unfortunately didn`t got any. So we had to eat pea soap for dinner. Outi made delicious small pancakes.
Heavy swell on the north side of Märket. No visitors, no money but the spirit of Märket is anyway on high level.
150909 Busy Day
Very busy day. Early in the morning we started to fix the mainengine of rescueboat. We disconnected a part where iron bars were bendid probably when running aground.
Timo saw sparrowhawk ( Accipiter nisus ) hunting swallows wich had nest under the eaves.
Gentel breeze and the sun shined all day long. This may be the last fine day of the season.
160909 Waves and Work
Today the sun rised, surprise surprise, from the easter horisont again. Beautiful waves with white sheeps on top are carrying messages to us from SW diection.
After midday the wind turned more to west and waves became higher than in the morning. So to day there was no visitors or mermaids on island at all. In the afternoon the sun disappeared totaly behind the clouds and wind became quite chilly. We have to keep us warm by working more hard than ever.
Before dinner Timo carried firewoods to all fireplaces so that we can light them before darkness. After 9 o’clock pm it is very dangerous to walk anywhere on the island without personal flashlight because the darkness is so total that only the bats, if there is any, can “see” where to go. There is no electricity on island, so we spend the evening sitting around paraffin lamp, drinking tea and telling sailor stories.
170909 Stormy Thursday
I have been (Kalle) here now 13 days and this is the fiest one when the sea is really stormy. Northwest waves run over this rock in several places. No human being can land to the rock and we don’t have any chance to escape through the stormy sea to mainland. We are totaly isolated from civilized sosiety. We have just listed our provisions and wondered if we have enough potatoes over the next winter.
When i came here the humidity in the lighthouse was 88%. The very first morning was like waking up in the London Dungeon. Doing regular heating duoring these days the humidity has decreased down to 55%. Now it is more comfortable to wake up in the morning when outside temperature is as low as +11,6 degrees Celcius.
The night has come and the wind went to bed so do we.
180909 Last Day
The last whole day started a bit chilly (+11,2 degrees) and cloudy. Yesterday storm has calmed down.
We walked around the Rock but couldn’t find wreks or any other goods. We were sure that we find a case of dark rum floating on seaside but that dream never came true. So we came back to lighthouse and had typical Märket breakfast, oatmeal porridge and black coffee.
Rest of the day we spent cleaning the lighthouse, cuting firewoods for the next watch and packing the bags ready to leave Märket lighthouse early in the morning.
