Sunday 14.9.2014

We woke up to a warm, sunny morning. The sea was calm so after breakfast we thought to take a little boatride to see if we could find some seals. We saw one but it didn’t care for company. Only the birds were keeping watch.

Shortly after we got visitors from Åland. After showing them the lighthouse we all sat down together and had some coffee and got to share a cake that they had with them. Thank you for a lovely visit!

Our guests Petra, August, Paul ja Sofi

No day without working as well: Matti and Pasi started working with the oven in the third floor and Heli painted rails.

After working it was time to make dinner and go to sauna. Hopefully we’ll see some northern lights tonight. Last night there were none.

Monday 15.9.2014

Another sunny and warm morning. Feels like the summer is back on Märket!

After the breakfast the weather changed from sunny to foggy. Not for long though.

With the fog gone, we started with today’s tasks. Matti headed back to the attick to work with the oven. Pasi and Heli teamed up and chopped some wood.

The sea was quite calm today too so we thought to give the seals one more chance and headed out with the boat after lunch. We saw two seals this time.

We continued working until dinnertime. In the evening the weather was still nice and warm, perfect for observing and taking some pictures.

The morning was foggy and a bit windy. Mats called to inform us that he was coming over and by the time Sefyr arrived, the weather had started to clear out.

The purpose for the visit was to install steel net on the rail up around the lamp. Now it’s safer to be up there.

As Mats and David were working with the rail we continued with our tasks. We finished chopping the wood. Matti continued with the oven in the attic, the work there is nearly finished. We did some cleaning and organizing plus a little inventory in the kitchen. Not to forget enjoying the sunny day.

A whiter shade on the cliffs

We also received good news: the height of the rail in the staircase had been approved by the authorities.

Approved height

When the day started to turn into evening, Pasi volonteered to cook the dinner and Matti to wash the dishes. Perfect gentlemen, these two!

Wednesday 17.9.2014

The morning started with a beautiful sunrise.

The day was incredible warm. We however didn’t let it get on the way of today’s work.

The oven in the attic was finished today.

We moved the chopped wood up to storage.

We also took down the scaffolds.

The sea was still and the day so warm that after lunch we decided to go out with the boat again. The seals haven’t come to visit us so we went to visit them – but they weren’t at home.

After the boatride it was time for cleaning, there was much dust in the attic and in the stairs after all the work with the oven.

When the cleaning was done we got visitors from Sweden, four very nice and very generous guys. We had a lot of fun showing them the lighthouse and having some coffee together. Thank you for the visit!

Then it was time for dinner and washing up. That pretty much wraps up the day.

Thursday 18.9.2014

The morning was foggy and a bit windy. That ruled out our plan to continue painting the rails. In the meantime, we noticed that further cleaning in the attic was needed and scrubbed the room once again.

Pasi and Matti did an inventory of the plaster we have here. After completing the inventory, Matti made us delicious pancakes for lunch.

We have had quite warm weather so we haven’t heated the ovens here at all. Today we thought that it’s better to heat a bit and started with one oven at the time. It went well.

It looked like the weather would not clear at all, but finally the fog started to disappear and we were able to do some painting. As well as washing the dishes.

After dinner and washing some more dishes we took it easy with a cup of tea in a windy Märket evening.

Friday 19.9.2014

Our last day here began in sunny weather, although it didn’t take long before the fog started taking over. One can only guess how long the fog surrounds the islet, and today the foggy weather lasted until late afternoon.

But that was alright with us, for this was our cleaning day. Matti and Pasi started with cleaning the chimney pipe of the oven in the yard, we had noticed that it wasn’t working properly. And no wonder, there was much soot in there.

We continued to clean the lighthouse rooms for the new crew that arrives tomorrow. By the time we were done with the cleaning, the fog had started to disappear and the sun was shining again. So we decided to have afternoon coffee on the yard.

So the foggy day turned into a sunny evening. We had few tasks left, Matti sharpened some knives, we counted the funds in the shop and wrote the last postcards. Pasi made dinner and then it was time for sauna. Thank you for this week Märket!
