Week 25: Anne, Kaija, Katja, Maija and Teppo

The change of the guard at the lighthouse begins with a boat journey from Eckerö. The new crew was well prepared (note the sauna hats) for the one-hour sea journey on Mats’ new boat.

This time we were able to disembark in the natural harbour, where the previous week’s crew was already waiting for us.

The beautiful weather brought guests from Åland straight away in the morning. The company continued its journey to observe the traditional Postal Boat Rowing event.

The radio amateurs will be on the island for a few more days. One of their antenna systems is pointed towards the moon, transmitting signals that attempt to evade the local fauna.

Over the years, the hallway wall has been painted with different colors. The original brown colour is now being restored carefully.

The day has been windy and rainy, and the weather on the Swedish side looks similar. The sign painted on the rocks indicates the border between Finland and Sweden.

One needs to be careful to not accidentally step into a tern’s nest while traversing the Märket rocks. Then again, an angry tern drives any intruders away swiftly.

Monday morning dawned sunny and windy. Teppo inspected the state of the natural harbour.

Our radio amateur quests are leaving today. Wind is still hard, even harder than yesterday.There was no chance to land on northern harbour. Thus the rubber boat was taken down to carry our four radio amateurs to the boat.

Teppo made at least five tours with the rubber boat to pick up visitors and a lot of radio equipments and antenna cables. To transport these with a small rubber boat was not an easy task.

During the day weather was windy – no visitors today.

Good food, bathing in sauna, swimming in nature pool – typical traditions in Midsummer celebrations.

Midsummer is a main national holiday in Finland. Originally a celebration of the summer solstice, it is typically spent with friends and family at a summer cottage away from the city, either partying or relaxing.

Midsummer is often seen as the beginning of warm summer weather and many Finns start their summer holidays on Midsummer Eve. Taking place at the end of June, the Midnight Sun is a key element in the festivities in the northern parts of Finland. Not that it gets dark in the south, either; nights are white throughout the country.

Lighting bonfires and Midsummer spells were cast, many of which had to do with hopes of increasing fertility and finding a future spouse. Midsummer was also a popular time for weddings.
