Lauantai 7.7. Seitsemältä illalla tuuli salli lähtömme Märketille. Vaihto sujui kumiveneellä poijulta. Perillä maistuivat edellisen talkoovuoron laittamat voileivät, ja kun Teppo oli näyttänyt paikat meille ensikertalaisille, päästiin tulosaunan lämpöön. Illan pimetessä hylkeet lauloivat meille tervetuliaislaulun.

Saturday 7.7. We started our journey to Märket at about 7 pm, when the sea had calmed down a little. After arriving we had sauna and sandwiches (kindly prepared by the previous Märket crew), and heard the seals sing to welcome us on this lonely and unique little skerry.

Sunnuntai 8.7. Päivän tapaus oli yllättävä vierailu. Herkullinen sunnuntailounas keskeytyi moottorin jylinään, kun Märketille laskeutui helikopteri. Sieltä astui kalifornialainen herra, jonka ruotsalainen lentäjä oli tuonut suoraan Arlandasta Märketiä ihailemaan. Opastuskierroksen jälkeen istuimme kahville.

Sunday 8.7. We were just having a delicious Sunday lunch when we heard an unexpected sound: the roaring of a helicopter. A Swedish pilot had brought a Californian gentleman straight from Arlanda to see Märket, which was on his world travel bucket list. After the guided tour we had coffee together.

Maanantai 9.7. Tänään tehtiin sekalaisia siivous- ja puhdistustöitä sekä roskien polttoa. Myös paloruiskut tarkistettiin ja puhdistettiin. Sää on ollut lämmin ja aurinkoinen, ja hylkeet ovat köllötelleet koko päivän kalliolla laulamassa. Teppo kertoi, että hänen Märket-vuosinaan ei kertaakaan ole näkynyt näin paljon hylkeitä. Laskimme niitä lähes parisataa. Hylkeet ovat selvästi tulleet vähitellen siihen tulokseen, että viereisen luodon omituisista pystyhylkeistä ei ole vaaraa.

Monday 9.7. Today we did some miscellaneous cleaning. We cleaned and checked the fire pumps, too. The weather is warm and sunny, and the seals have been sunbathing and singing on the rocks all day long. Teppo says this is the largest amount of seals he has ever seen during his Märket years. They must be almost two hundred. It looks like the seals have little by little come to the conclusion that their neighbours, the upright seals, pose no danger to them.

Tiistai 10.7. Päivä alkoi rauhallisesti maustevaraston inventaariolla ja muulla puuhailulla. Eilisiltana saapuneiden sukeltajien laiva keinahteli luodon eteläpuolella.

Tuesday 10.7. The day started peacefully with domestic chores. Yesterday evening a group of divers had arrived on the southern side of the island, and their ship rocked gently on the waves.

Tänään saimme paljon vierailijoita. Eva ja Tommi rantautuivat itäsatamaan, ja Katri ja Antti Sessi-koiransa kanssa soutivat poijulta eteläsatamaan.

We got plenty of visitors today. Eva and Tommi got ashore on the eastern side of Märket. Katri, Antti and their dog Sessi chose the southern bay.

 

Seuraavaksi saarelle saapuivat meripartiolaiset Espoosta sekä Albanus-kaljaasin väki.

Näköpiirimme saapui päivän aikana myös Ruotsin Merivoimien HMS Falken, mutta sen miehistö ei ilmeisesti joutanut pistäytymään kahville.

We got a glimpse of the sailing vessel HMS Falken of the Swedish Royal Navy, too. It seemed they didn’t have time for a cup of coffee and a chat.

Keskiviikko 11.7. Aurinkoinen ja lämmin ilma jatkuu. Se sopikin hyvin tyynyjen ja peittojen tomuttamiseen ja tuulettamiseen. Eilisen yleisösuosion innostamina opiskelimme eri kielillä Märketin historiaa entistäkin ahkerammin, jotta tarvittaessa voidaan opastaa useampaa ryhmää kerralla. Kaupassa pussitettiin ahkerasti t-paitoja.

Wednesday 11.7. The sunny and warm weather is most suitable for airing out blankets and pillows. Inspired by the amount of visitors we got yesterday, we have been learning the history of Märket in different languages even more eagerly than before to be able to guide the visitors in several groups at the same time, if needed.

Märketille tullessamme keittiön varastossa komeili seitsemän isoa juuriselleriä. Annina on suurta luovuutta käyttäen upottanut meihin niistä jo kolme. Kuvassa on raikas sellerisalaatti, perjantaina saamme kuulemma paahdettua selleriä.

When we arrived at Märket, there were seven large celeriacs in the food storage. With admirable creativity, Annina has already managed to use three of them in different dishes. Today we had tasty celeriac salad for lunch, and on Friday we’ll get roasted celeriac, she says.

Torstai 12.7. Ihana, suorastaan helteinen sää on houkutellut Märketille paljon vieraita. Eilen illansuussa pohjoissatamaan saapui S/Y Kleopatra. Majakkaan tutustuttuaan miehet jatkoivat matkaa pimenevällä merellä.

Thursday, 12.7. The lovely summer weather has attracted a lot of visitors to Märket. Yesterday evening S/Y Kleopatra arrived at the northern haven. After being guided through the island and the lighthouse the crew continued their journey on the darkening sea.
